Wanderers stun lofty Blades

Stuart Beavon's effort proved enough to hand Wycombe their first league win of the season at Adams Park and inflict high-flying Sheffield United`s first defeat on the road.

The 27-year-old struck the winner in the 31st minute, his first league goal of the season, as the Chairboys ended an unwanted five-match losing sequence in League One to lift themselves out of the drop zone.

Beavon could have netted earlier but was denied by Steve Simonsen while Blades midfielder Lee Williamson also wasted a glorious chance before the opener, with Ched Evans striking the crossbar after the break.

In his 100th game as Wycombe boss, Gary Waddock was celebrating almost immediately when Scott Donnelly set up Beavon 18 yards out - however Simonsen stood firm to deny the Wanderers frontman.

Williamson had a better chance at the other end but headed over - and he was made to pay, as was Harry Maguire, whose mistake allowed Beavon through to break the deadlock.

United looked good after the restart and Evans thumped the bar will a well-taken 25-yard strike in the 54th minute while a Maguire header was scrambled off the line, but it was not to be.
