A strong crowd of (estimated) 30,000 packed into Bramall Lane for the 31st meeting of the two professional Sheffield sides which saw United lead by two goals to nil after only 18 minute before the Wednesday dragged it back to 3-2 ahead and with ten minutes spare United levelled the game.
Despite having gone three matches without victory the Blades were considered the form team - they were 5th in the table with 5 wins (4 draws) from 11 games played whilst the Owls lay 14th and claimed only three wins and three draws from their 11 matches played also. With this in mind it didn't become somewhat of a surprise when the hosts had taken the lead.
It was a 'gift of a goal' from Teddy Davison in the Wednesday net who at 5'6" wasn't the tallest keeper but he let a long range effort from Brelsford slip through his fingers and watched agonisingly as the ball rolled over the line; 1-0.
Eight minutes later the Blades were two goals to the good when Simmons scored. Wednesday bounced back via Sammy Kirkham who seemed to have missed his chance when he collided with Brooks but swiftly recovered to steam past Albert Sturgess and fired hard past Levesley with his left foot.
The equaliser came soon after when Andrew Wilson flicked coolly flicked on a cross from Foxall which teed up Harry Chapman to score. The teams went in level at the break 2-2 and seven minutes after the re-start the Wednesday found themselves ahead for the first time in the game.
Kirkham controlled brilliantly from a long range dropping ball, he swept past Bob Benson before shooting them in front. Not to be outdone the Blades didn't give up and with ten minutes remaining Simmons netted his second of the day when he headed home a cross from Evans.
