Neil Shipperley grabbed his fifth of the season as Neil Warnock's side bounced back from defeat at Reading to sink their promotion rivals
The 2-1 setback two weeks ago ended a club record run of 10 games without defeat.
But the Sheffield side responded by grabbing a stranglehold on the game against the side that ended their dreams of the Premiership in the play-offs back in May 2003.
Warnock's high-fliers went at Wolves from the start with Alan Quinn testing Michael Oakes with a left-foot strike from 25 yards which was smothered by the Wolves keeper diving to his left.
United swept ahead on 16 minutes after a mix up between Oakes and centre-back Joleon Lescott proved costly.
After the pair both failed to clear a deep centre, David Unsworth's left-foot cross found skipper Chris Morgan who headed back into the goalmouth and Shipperley finished off at the far post to record his fifth of the season.
The Sheffield side failed to stop Kenny Miller's surging run from midfield as Wolves finally found a gap but his right-foot shot caused no problems for Paddy Kenny.
The Molineux were side totally outplayed by United but almost snatched an equaliser in the 44th minute when South Korean striker Seol worked his was past Kenny to hit a deep cross but Rob Kozluk stretched to head clear.
Steve Kabba should have killed off Wolves in the 62nd minute as he met substitute Keith Gillespie's cross but from six yards he pulled his header wide.
Wolves threw away the chance to grab a point they hardly deserved eight minutes from time when substitute Mark Davies' cross from the left fell perfectly for the incoming Carl Cort but instead of finishing with his head he tried a spectacular volley and slammed the ball over the target from eight yards.
