Neil Warnock's big party night turned sour when the volatile Sheffield United manager was sent off by Premiership referee Graham Poll.
Warnock was celebrating along with 30,000 Blades as their Yorkshire neighbours watched with envious eyes.
But lifelong Bramall Lane fan Warnock lost his cool two minutes before half-time when he furiously protested at Poll following a Gary Kelly foul on Craig Short.
Furious Warnock had a touchline shouting match with his former assistant and now Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell and Poll intervened.
Warnock was waving his arms and Poll asked a police officer to help and the United boss jostled with the policeman as he was led away to the stands.
The home fans were partying long before the start after Leeds' draw with Reading on Saturday had guaranteed their club's return to the Premiership after a 12-year exile.
The Sheffield party was already jumping before the start, but after his side were given a rousing standing ovation Warnock uncharacteristically slipped in almost unnoticed seconds after the kick-off.
And the celebrations were in full swing after 10 minutes when Warnock's side went in front.
David Unsworth's wicked curling corner was a nightmare to defend against and Eirik Bakke was first to meet it but only succeeded in glancing his header past his own keeper Neil Sullivan.
Leeds justifiably felt hard done by when Poll inexplicably denied them a penalty.
David Healy threaded and inch-perfect ball into the area for Bakke to chase after 18 minutes and he was hauled down by defender Short only for Mr Poll to wave away any protests.
But then three minutes before half-time Leeds - without a win in seven games - were back level after patiently working their way back into possession.
Healy snapped up the ball outside the area and cut inside before drilling a low accurate effort which beat Paddy Kenny and levelled the scores.
Seconds later came the touchline explosion that saw Warnock ordered to the stands but the game finished all-square.
