Blades put Shakers to the sword
Goals from Chris Porter, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Matt Lowton and substitute Erik Tonne gave Sheffield United a resounding 4-0 win at home to Bury.
Porter threatened a couple of times early on and Stephen Quinn had a free-kick well saved by Cameron Belford before the Blades took a 43rd-minute lead. Porter scored from close-range after Mendez-Laing and Quinn both had efforts blocked.
A mistake from Belford gifted United a second goal two minutes into the second-half when the goalkeeper misjudged Mendez-Laing's cross, turning the ball into his own net at the near post.
Giles Coke, making his Bury debut after signing on loan from Sheffield Wednesday, had a low shot easily saved by Steve Simonsen but the Shakers never threatened to mount a comeback.
Lowton put United further ahead after 71 minutes, turning the ball into the unguarded net after Belford could only parry Porter's low shot.
Bury's Michael Jones floated a free-kick just over before Tonne rounded off the scoring with six minutes remaining with a shot into the roof of the net following a corner.
