Ched puts Carlisle to bed

Ched Evans scored midway through the first half to give Sheffield United a 1-0 win at home to Carlisle.

Evans struck in the 21st minute, firing into the roof of the net at the far post after Lee Williamson's corner was headed on and the Carlisle defence failed to clear.

Williamson had gone close to giving the home side a sixth-minute lead when his shot was turned onto a post by keeper Adam Collin and Richard Cresswell, following up, blazed his effort off target.

Evans twice threatened the visitors' goal shortly after scoring, seeing an effort blocked inside the area and then putting a free-kick wide.

Lee Miller had Carlisle's first chance of note, firing narrowly wide with a low drive.

Cresswell wasted a great chance to make it 2-0 when he failed from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Ryan Flynn was fouled in the area by Christian Ribeiro and Cresswell's poor spot-kick was saved by Collin.

Miller went close for the visitors with a shot from the edge of the area which went a fraction over.
