The Sky Blues spurned one chance in the second half to win the game but it was Sheffield United who had the most and maybe on another day would have put them in, however they sadly didn't.
Before today's game Coventry City had gone four straight victories and where a tough nut to crack as United ended that victorious run, the point was not bad for United as teams around them did not win which means they stayed 3rd with a 3 point lead over Norwich City and Nottingham Forest.
Dean Gordon was a new comer to the Sky Blues line-up to that which beat Reading 2-0 on Boxing Day, though it was not a welcome return as he was booked in the first half and then received his second after virtually mugging Peter Ndlovu on the right wing.
In a end-to-end first half United went close when Midfield supreme Michael Brown was denied by keeper Morton Hyldgaard when he smashed a 20-yarder which was saved, at the other end Paddy Kenny tipped a brilliant effort from Dean Holdsworth round the post.
Michael Tonge, who was also recalled after starting on the bench in the 1-0 victory over Walsall on Boxing Day also went close as he shot just wide of the goal.
As United attempted to find a goal Michael Brown shot over the bar, the visitors then had to make a substitute when Craig Hignett was injured with a ankle injury, the injury occurred when Ndlovu hit a powerful shot which cannoned off Hignett's leg.
However the Sky Blues looked threatening at times as Jay Bothroyd went close when his long range effort was once again saved by Kenny.
In the second half the Blades searched for that vital goal and still they went close on a few attempts while Hyldgaard was kept busy. He first stopped Ndlovu and then Brown's header from going in, followed by Michael Tonge after he danced round the Blues defenders.
Phil Jagielka joined the Blades attack as Blues were pegged back, however he did not come any closer as two of his headers went wide of goal.
Coventry did get a breather and a chance to score but on-loan striker Dean Holdsworth could not capitalise as Craig Pead crossed but Holdsworth's shot failed to hit the target.
Both United and City made attacking tactical changes, with Canadian International Paul Peschisolido joining United while Gary McSheffrey coming on for City.
The Dean Gordon sending off took the wind out of opponents as there main job was now to defend a very attacking United, Tonge once again tested the keeper but his shot again was tipped round the post.
A Stuart McCall effort cleared the bar while Wayne 'The Chief' Allison saw his header saved before Brown fired wide in a last ditch attempted to find a winner.
