The Dons won promotion into the Championship in 2015 for the first time since their awkward formation in 2004, having divorcing themselves from AFC Wimbledon. Their debut seasons in England’s second tier ended in misery and are now back in League One. Despite relegation they had kept hold of manager Karl Robinson who tenured his resignation following last Saturday’s 3-0 home defeats to Southend.
His exit is married with their poor start to the 'new' season, which has (so far) been less than impressive. There last home victory came against QPR (2-0) last March and currently only one point separates themselves from the bottom four relegation spots.
"Milton Keynes Dons Football Club and Karl Robinson have today (Sunday) parted company by mutual consent," read a club statement. Richie Barker will lead the team over the next shortcoming fixtures as caretaker manger until the club appoint a new boss.
Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth scored a brace as Southend secured a convincing 3-0 win over MK Dons. Simon Cox opened the scoring for the visitors after only two minutes as he turned and slotted home from close range after the Dons failed to clear their lines from a corner. And just as the Dons looked to be taking control of the game, Southend doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Wordsworth fired a low strike into the bottom right-hand corner.
Dean Bowditch should have pulled one back late in the first half after finding himself one on one with Mark Oxley, but his tame effort was wide of the mark. Wordsworth rounded off the victory for Southend - ending a run of five away games without a victory - by curling home a free-kick late on.
The Dons were boosted by the return of duo Joe Walsh (left full-back) and Darren Potter (midfielder) for their defeat to Southend after the pair had missed the 3-3 draw with Bristol Rovers due to suspension, despite leading the game 3-1 with 87 minutes on the clock.
However they are hampered by injuries to; George Baldock (hamstring), Chucks Aneke (knee), Scott Wootton (cruciate ligament) and Keiran Agard (knee) - all are key missing players.
