The Blades go into this game having just beaten high flyers Norwich City 3-2 at Carrow Road, a victory to be very proud of as it is the first time in eight years since United have beaten Norwich on their own ground. Adding to that is the fact that they have not lost at home this season nor has any other club scored against them this season.
During the stuffing of the Canaries key players such as Michael Brown and Nick Montgomery were both substituted for minor injuries.
Most football fans see the Worthington Cup as the Worthless Cup, though it does give you a passage into UEFA Cup, fans see it as a pointless competition. In the early stages of the competition clubs are expected to receive very low attendances, it is for that reason that United have decided to open up the South Stand only to home supporters.
Baring in mind that is seen as a low key game I would imagine that Neil Warnock would consider dropping a few key players in order to rest them for the South Yorkshire derby on Saturday against Rotherham United.
I would imagine that Neil Warnock might go for this starting line up if he does not play the whole first team:
Wilko De Vogt (GK), Robert Kozluk (RB), Shaun Murphy (CB) (Captain), Phil Jagielka (CB), Robert Ullathorne (LB), Jon-Paul McGovern (RM), Stuart McCall (CM), John-Phillip Javary (CM), Peter Ndlovu (LM), Carl Asaba (RF), Iffy Onoura (LF).
Subs: Paddy Kenny (GK), Colin Cryan (CB), Laurens Ten Heuvel (RF), Paul Peschisolido (LF), Michael Tonge (CM).
This would mean leaving out Paddy Kenny (GK), Michael Brown (CM) (came off injured against Norwich), Robert Page (CD) (could be back from injury against Millers), Steve Yates (CD) (injured for four weeks) and Michael Tonge (CM). These are key players and Neil Warnock will have to realize that league games are more important that Worthington Cup and needs to save them for the game on Saturday.
So far this season York have done very well and only just missed out on going top of division three on weekend, this is thanks to ex-blade Peter Duffield is top goal scorer at Bootham Crescent, and he says that he aims to take the Minstermen through to round 2 with his goals.
This is not a tie that United fans what, they would rather play a Premier League side but they can not as Premiership teams enter at rounds 2 and 3 and so United have to put up with a division 3 side. York will want to win this as Giant Killing gives them a boost in confidence.
Prediction: I think that Peter Duffield will get his goal, but when United are already 3-0 up and United will should win comfortably. If however it goes to penalties after extra time the tie is anybody's, but United should win it.
