The 35-year-old, who was renowned for his committed and no-nonsense approach to games when captaining the Blades, reckons it should be a given that every player gives their all when taking to the field.
United face Port Vale on Saturday in what is Chris Morgan's first home game in temporary charge of the Blades this season, in what is his second stint as caretaker.
"Any football supporter, anybody that pays good money to go and watch their team want to see those 11 players on that pitch to give their all for their football club," said Morgan.
"If you were to swap the players and put 11 supporters out on the pitch that's what you would get from the supporters.
"They want to see us play in the right way, but any football supporter coming to watch their team want to see their team win.
"When you are walking away through the turnstiles and out of the stadium on a Saturday night you want to go home knowing your team has won; it's all about winning."
Former Blades boss Micky Adams brings the Valiants to Bramall Lane at the weekend; his first return to S2 since getting the sack in 2011.
Micky is assisted by ex-captain Robert Page, who made over 100 appearances for United. Incidentally, the Welshman was interviewed for the Sheffield United managerial hotseat in the summer when the club opted to appoint rookie David Weir instead, who has now of course been sacked.
