Bates refereed United's penultimate home match of the regular season against Leyton Orient, in what was a 3:1 victory for the Blades. Bates issued two yellow cards to United players in that match; one to Harry Maguire and one to Ched Evans. He also dismissed Orient's Ryan Dickson.
