MK Dons, the club which is now commonly known as were formed in 1889 has Wimbledon FC and retained that name until 2004 when they moved from there Selhurst Park ground (which they rented from Crystal Palace) to firstly the National Hockey Stadium until Stadium:MK was built.
In their hay day the Dons, who were capped the nickname of the ‘Crazy Gang’ played there home games at Plough Lane and it became a difficult place to play.
Despite being formed as long as United the pair didn’t first meet professionally until December 1979 in the old Third Division, the game was drawn 1-1 on a day when a record 44 goals were scored throughout the English leagues; Barry Butlin netted for United whilst future legend Alan Cork scored for the Dons.
Financial hardship saw the Dons leave Plough Lane in May 1991 and moved into Selhurst Park until 2003 – but it had become fortunate ground for the home side for United never won a match at either stadium. In two visits (both in 1985) the Blades were on the wrong end of a 5-0 score-line.
When the club moved to the National Hockey Stadium, it became a lucky break for the Blades and on their first (and only) visit their recorded a 2-1 victory. That win came in September 2003 at the Dons former National Hockey Stadium home, it was only a temporary stadium until the new Stadium:MK was built. United won 2-1 that day with goals from Ashley Ward and Paul Peschisolido, a result which then took the Blades to top of the Championship but sadly didn't end the season in that position.
United haven't won at Stadium:MK in league matches either, but during Brian Robson's reign; in August 2007 Geoff Horsefield netted an extra-time winner to give United a 3-2 victory in the League Cup - it was his only goal in United colours in what turned out to be very few appearances.
The Blades record at Bramall Lane is quite good and they haven’t been beaten in the previous five outings against MK. Last season however the Dons took four points off United, on 10 November 2012 United were defeated 1-0 at Stadium:MK - the defeat ended a run of 16 league matches unbeaten that season and a total of 24 competitive fixtures without defeat (penalty shoot-out defeats are marked as draws). But it was Mk Dons, whom ironically were the last team to beat United in a 90 minute match to end this great run of form, it came in the final minute of the match when a 'unlikely' penalty was awarded and Shaun Williams (90 minutes) dispatched without care. In the return fixture at the Lane on 9 March the pair drew 0-0 in a drab match.
