Games between the Blades and the Magpies have gone a long way, Nott’s County were the founder members of the Football League and sounded there first ever league game with a 2-1 defeat to Everton at Anfield. They were along the way handed a 7-0 drumming by the hands of Preston North End and eventually finished just one place above bottom club Stoke.
When the league system was extended by a further four teams and included a new Second Division tier, County finished third from bottom and was forced to play a one-off ‘Test Match’ against a side which finished within the top three of the second tier. They faced Darwen in Manchester (neutral ground) and lost 3-2 and were relegated. Sheffield United beat Accrington by a single goal and thus (along with Darwen) became one of the first two sides to win promotion.
The Magpies had to wait a further 4 years until they won promotion, despite winning the league they were again forced to play out test matches, firstly beating Sunderland and then Burnley over two-legs – at the time Burnley had an exceptional side and were considered hard to beat.
It therefore coincided that the first meetings between the two clubs on a professional basis (at least) came in the 1897/98 Championship winning season by United. They had finished runners-up behind Villa the year previous but this term was to be the Blades only league success in there long history. They first met on New Year’s Day 1898 where United won by three goals to one at Trent Bridge, and in the return fixture over a month later was won 1-0 by County at the Lane – one of only two home defeats that season.
The pair has met in the top three Football League tiers and had the Nottingham club managed to keep hold of their first Division status then this could well have been a Premiership fixture also. Under the reign of Neil Warnock County finished second bottom during the 1991/92 campaign and thus missed out on the opportunity to become founder members of the FA Premier League. Only Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and Everton hold the honour of being founder members of both Associations.
Last season the two teams met on three occasions owing to Johnstone’s Paint involvement. On 29 September they had drawn in the league 1-1 at Bramall Lane, Dave Kitson (51 minutes) had given the hosts the lead but veteran villain Lee Hughes (75) pounced to level the scores. United had been handed a bye in the first round of the JPT and faced Nott’s County on 17 October in the second round and went through with renouncing success, beating Nott's County 4-1 at Meadow Lane to book a place in the next round at Coventry City. Braces from Shaun Miller and Harry Maguire secured the win whilst former Blade Jordan Stewart netted a scant consolation for the hosts.
They met again in the league at Meadow Lane on 19 January at a time when the Blades had yet to win a league match in 2013. This looked to be the turning point when after only 90 seconds a headed corner from Harry Maguire found the net. The win looked even more so when Magpies star striker Francois Zoko was dismissed following a few choice words with the referee Mark Haywood. With 10 minutes of the match remaining a free-kick was met by Alan Judge and evaded by everyone, including keeper George Long as the ball found the net.
Friday, 2 August 2013
Sheffield United met Nott's County on the opening day of the 2013/14 League One season; it was also new manager David Weir's first competitive match of his career. Live on Sky the former Everton coach started his new career with a bang in a 2-1 victory. Though this victory was to be handed a helping hand when Gary Liddle was dismissed after 13 minutes whilst Kevin McDonald blasted United into the lead on the half-hour mark, however in the second half substitute Enoch Showunmi levelled on 59 minutes only for Harry Maguire (67) to restore the hosts lead.
United had made a bright start to the game with Jamie Murphy firing a free-kick at Bartosz Bialkowski but little after ten minutes of play Liddle was handed a red card following a high challenge on McDonald in the ribs. The Blades were denied a penalty when Chris Porter and Dean Leacock tussled in the box before McDonald put the hosts ahead, finishing at the near post after Darryl Westlake crossed. With a man advantage the home side applied the pressure in the second half with Bialkowski preventing Michael Doyle from doubling their lead whilst McDonald fired wide with his attempt.
Former Derby County striker Porter had two 'good' opportunities to increase their lead but his first attempt flew over and at the second he failed to make a positive connection after Neill Collins had a punt at goal. On 59 minutes the Blades would be punished for missed chances when Showunmi fired home a 25 yard effort - but eight minutes later the lead was restored through defender Maguire who placed his header well past the keeper following a free-kick.
Lyle Taylor was introduced, marking his debut in United colours and he saw a free-kick attempt pushed away by Bialkowski before Fotheringham hit wide at the other end. The hosts had two more chances to extend their lead as the game drew to a close, Brandy was thwarted by the keeper from close range and Conor Coady flicked wide. It was a great start to the season, but for Weir this was to be his only victory as manager of Sheffield United and sadly as a result of a long winless run was relieved of his duties on 11 October 2013 and soon replaced by Nigel Clough.
