The Scotsman's operation turned out that he'd be out for several months after worsening his injury against Burnley two weeks ago. Derek Geary, Ugo Ehiogu and Gary Speed are all long-term absentees, although the latter could be fit enough to feature in the play-offs if United do have to settle for a place in the top six.
Other than the injured players above, Kevin Blackwell has fully-fit squad in front of him to choose from. Brian Howard is available for selection again after missing the previous two games against Burnley and Swansea due to suspension.
Striker Anthony Stokes could play against his former club, Sheffield United. The Irishman had a loan stint at the Lane earlier in the season, but after an unsuccessful stay, the Sunderland front man made his way down south to Selhurst Park. Meanwhile Paul Ifill probably won't feature against the Blades, who he of course played for in the illustrious promotion campaign.
