24 teams will battle it out over the course of 529 football league fixtures to determine which teams will be the strongest in gaining promotion to the Championship and which sides who cannot last the pace and thus will fall from grace - ending their battles with ultimate failure and League Two football next season.
Using odds set out by the bookmakers I have enlisted a top six which will battle for promotion and the bottom six which will battle to retain their status in League One, as for the rest I'll leave it up to you to decide their fate...
Promotion Contenders
Without being biased Sheffield United are once again contenders to take League One by storm, they were twelve months ago under the former regime of Nigel Clough. But with just two new permanent signings (Martyn Woolford & Billy Sharp) along with the loan signing of Conor Sammon's look stronger in attack but may falter in defence if this section isn't bolstered by the end of the transfer window.
In accordance to the bookies there will be a strong Yorkshire contingency with the Blades, Bradford City and Barnsley representing the top six promotion spots whilst Doncaster Rovers are expecting to be not too far behind the chasing pack. Peterborough United are expected to be amongst the play-offs spot again - they are regularly tipped to finish in the top six whilst the duo relegated from the Championship (Wigan Athletic & Millwall) should also be up there.
Top 6 + Promotion Odds
Sheffield United | 7/4 |
Wigan Athletic | 5/2 |
Millwall | 7/4 |
Peterborough United | 9/2 |
Bradford City | 5/1 |
Barnsley | 5/1 |
Millwall are perhaps the biggest side in the division who have had to cut there cloth after the demise from relegation. Along with Danny Shittu and Ricardo Fuller the Lions released 14 players and since then sold a further 5 more (including Woolford) and their only purchase was Tom Craig (from Brentford) on a free transfer. Nether the less they are expected to make an impact and finish third in the league behind the Blades and Latics who splashed out £900,000 on Will Grigg (Brentford). They lost 11 players during the summer but the Lancashire side have bolstered with 9 signings with Grigg and Craig Davies (Bolton Wanderers) being their biggest threat in attack.
Barnsley allowed League One veteran Jean-Yves M'Voto and Leroy Lita to leave Oakwell in the summer but despite losing a further 8 players Lee Johnson has signed more players on loan than perminantly and perhaps more worryingly lost keeper Ross Turnbull to Leeds United - they are tipped to finish sixth but without more recruitment I cannot see the Reds finishing inside the play-off spots.
Darkhorse for a top six finish I believe will be Coventry City who have made four new signings but seem to have a strong squad and I am sure having returned to the Ricoh Arena last season will liven up their home support.
Battling Against The Drop
No team wishes to see their side relegated in any Division but in League One, come May the four bottom teams in this league will be forced to play bottom tier football in the 2016/17 season. But the bookies odds have favoured that Blackpool, who were a Premier League side only a few years ago will be unsuccessful in back to back relegation battles. It comes has no surprise that the Tangerines will be tipped to fit in the bottom four but they aren't bookmakers favourites for the drop but have interestingly signed Jarrett Rivers (Blyth Spartans) who was an FA Cup hero at Hartlepool United last season.
That honour goes to Crewe Alexandra who escaped the drop last season at the expense of Leyton Orient and I fear that unfortunately it will be the Railwaymen's turn.
Bottom 6 + Relegation Odds
Crewe Alexandra | Evens |
Colchester United | 13/10 |
Port Vale | 13/8 |
Blackpool | 2/1 |
Southend United | 4/1 |
Oldham Athletic | 9/2 |
Port vale, who are managed by former Blades defender Robert page also expected to fall foul of the relegation trap door despite escaping at the last ditch last season, as are Colchester United. Chris Porter missed a penalty in their final game with Preston North End but later turned provider as the U's won 1-0 and was enough to secure their own safety and in the process prevent the Lilywhites from gaining automatic promotion.
Of course these are all pre-season predictions made by the bookmakers but it will ultimately be the results which prove vital and determine where your team finishes in League One. I would hope that it ends in a Sheffield United promotion but only time will tell!
