Bradford City vs. Sheffield United - Part 2

Last updated : 20 October 2016 By @blades_mad1889

The West Yorkshire side have got out of the traps pretty early with good results placing them second in the league behind leaders Scunthorpe United. Though only a point separates both the Bantams and the Blades with a point not being too damaging for either club at this stage of the season.

Their last six matches has seen the Valley Parade win three back-to-back fixtures against Fleetwood Town (2-1), Chesterfield (1-0) and Shrewsbury Town (2-0) as well as two draws with Bolton Wanderers (0-0) and Southend United (1-1) in midweek. Their defeat during this spell was a 1-0 defeat at Oxford United.

Anthony Wordsworth scored a second-half equaliser to earn Southend a deserved point with a 1-1 draw at second-placed Bradford. The Bantams, who lost their unbeaten record at Oxford on Saturday, went in front in the 36th minute through striker Marc McNulty - his first goal since joining on loan from Sheffield United.

McNulty raced onto a through pass from Haris Vuckic before shooting past the advancing Marc Oxley and he almost scored a second two minutes later, seeing his first shot blocked and his second deflected over the crossbar. Josh Cullen also went close as Bradford ended the first half in charge.

However, Southend began the second half well, Nile Ranger forcing a diving save out of Colin Doyle in the 49th minute before they scored an equaliser five minutes later. Ben Coker's left-wing cross was flicked on by former Bradford midfielder Will Atkinson and Wordsworth netted with a close-range header at the far post. Both sides had chances to score a winner as play swung from end to end but a draw was fair result.

Bradford defender James Meredith is hoping to return to action in the home game against boss Stuart McCall's former club Sheffield United. Left-back Meredith missed the midweek home draw against Southend after turning his ankle in last Saturday's defeat at Oxford but will be assessed and has not been ruled out.

On-loan striker Marc McNulty will not be available to play against his parent club and defender Tony McMahon remains sidelined due to a thigh problem. Strikers James Hanson and Jordy Hiwula and winger Filipe Morais are pushing for recalls to the starting line-up.
