The Whites won automatic promotion after a three year of absence out of the Championship. In 2006 they came very close to winning promotion to the Premier League but were outdone by Watford (3-0).

Kevin Blackwell was then manager of the Peacocks and twelve months later were struck by relegation after a difficult season. From there they struggled to find a way out of the league, they entered administration and was deducted points which they failed to make up to finish in a play-off place.

They did however finalise a top sixth finish during the 2008/09 campaign but Millwall over shadowed them over two legs.

Last season they threatened to win the league and they were in top spot for the majority of the season until an FA Cup win at Manchester United (1-0) in January sparked a poor run of form which allowed Norwich City to steal first place.

Jermaine Beckford netted the winner at Old Trafford and he has now joined Everton on a free transfer - finding his replacement will be tough to find but the inclusion of Billy Paynter (Swindon Town) may add some strength in attack.
