ThirlWell, who joined the Blades from Sunder last summer on free transfer managed to play 28 (+ 8 as sub) games whilst scoring once in that dramatic 3-3 home draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Prior to that he played 66 (+ 26 as sub) games and netted once in a League Cup. He played for the Black Cats between August 1997 and July 2004, during that time he also spent time on loan at Swindon where he played 12 games during 1999-00 season.
It is believed Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie is looking for experience in Midfield as they look to a bolster which could take them up to the Championship next season. Indecently the Oakwell club have just completed the signing of striker Daniel Nardiello from Manchester United.
