Tonge, 26 joined the Britannia Stadium in September 2008 in a £1,000,000 deal but has since just one Premiership start for the Potters as well as nine substitute appearances.
He joined Bramall Lane in August 2000 after being turned down by Manchester United; making his debut in a 1-0 home defeat at the end of that season to Wimbledon (now MK Dons).
He had a barn storming season during the triple assault of 2002/03 where the club reached the semi-finals of the League and FA Cup only to lose out to Liverpool and Arsenal. In the home leg against the Reds the Blades came from a goal down to win 2-1 with two goals from Tonge. United also reached the Play-Off final, which was subsequently lost 3-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
According to the national newspaper 'The Daily Star Saturday;' Kevin Blackwell is planning a £2,000,000 raid to bring the former Blade back to the Lane. We don't know if this transfer rumour is true but we hope that should United win promotion that a similar rescue package be thought up to bring back James Beattie.
