Lita wouldn't cost United penny to bring in and a host of clubs have been chasing his signature since it was revealed that he would be available for a move elsewhere. Leroy has had a rather prolific career, beginning at Bristol City and most recently has fired in the goals at Reading with loan spells at Charlton Athletic and Norwich City also.
Last week, Ched Evans bolstered the Blades' attacking options for next season, which starts in a week's time on Friday, but a deal to capture Leroy Lita isn't signed and sealed, yet.
Kevin Blackwell confirmed: "Yes, I am in contact with Leroy and his agent and I would like to think that the kid can just come in and play football and let the rest take care of itself, but unfortunately it is never like that.
"I felt that we need more prolific scorers in the Club and I am trying to do that with Ched, and if I could get Leroy as well it would be terrific.
"But once again interest in players like that is great so competition is fierce and it is never as easy as you would like it to be."
United could be struggling in the striking department come next Friday when they entertain Boro, as a number of circumstances will stall their preparations. Darius Henderson is fighting back from a relatively long-term injury and hasn't had any pre-season games, Jamie Ward is suspended following his dismissal at Wembley in May, Billy Sharp is transfer listed but could still play a part. New acquisition Ched Evans has also had no pre-season action but academy youngster Jordan Robertson could fill the void.
