Over the weekend (and Monday) saw South Yorkshire hit by a numerous spouts of heavy rain which has caused localised flooding, causing the River Don to burst its banks which is situated by the Owls football ground.
The near 40,000 seated stadium saw its pitch submerged about three feet under water with other areas of the ground affected.
It is likely that the pitch will need to be relayed once the water level drops, and with five weeks left to go until the new season starts the Owls could be in for a mammoth task into getting the current situation sorted.
A club spokesman explained: "We're waiting for the assistance of the fire service to get the water pumped away, then we can assess the damage to the playing surface and the undersoil heating.
"We're maybe looking at the cancellation of the pre-season game against Birmingham on 4th August 4, but we're still five weeks away from the first home game of the new season on 11th August.
"That gives us an extra two weeks to get ready, but until the water is cleared off the pitch we won't know the full extent of the damage.
"The water rose as high as Row F in the main stand, probably up to six feet and there is probably about three feet of water still on the pitch which does not seem to be draining ve
ry quickly at all.
"Flood waters have also gone into the directors' area, the boardroom, the dressing rooms, the Riverside restaurant and the kitchens."
Meanwhile, further down the road Rotherham United have seen their Millmoor ground slightly flooded. However they have so far only seen the goalmouth area of the Tivolli End affected.
The Millers are due to play Sheffield United in a a pre-season friendly on 31 July, whilst the Owls face Birmingham City on 4 August - these two fixtures could well be postponed.
