Speed took over the reins at Bramall Lane three games into the new 2010/11 seasons campaign after the sacking of Kevin Blackwell.
It would become ironic that his first game in charge as a new manager would end in defeat (0-1) at Middlesbrough and his tenure would end also in a 1-0 defeat away from home (at Barnsley).
What is even sadder is the fact that his time as manager with United lasted just 121 days before resigning to take up the vacant managers job as Wales national team – hardly Manchester United is it?
Is now of course leaves the Blades hunting for a new manager and several names will have already been thrashed out on the ever so popular Internet message boards as well as on BBC Radio Sheffield’s Football Heaven show.
Former Hull City boss Phil Brown is currently book makers favourite to take over at the Lane with current temporary boss John Carver listed in second. Ideal candidate, Chris Hughton – who is without a club having been relieved of his Newcastle United post last week, is within the top five running for the job.
On former players; John Pemberton, Andy Scott, Chris Wilder, Paul Peschisolido, Keith Curle, Neil Warnock, Alex Sabella, David Holdsworth, Glynn Hodges, Dave Bassett, Jim Gannon, Steve Wigley, Dean Saunders, Chris Short, Alan Cork, Stuart McCall, Bryan Robson, Brian Deane and Chris Kamara have all been listed as possible candidates.
Whoever is lucky enough to win the race to become Blades manager will firstly have the tough task of staving the club away from relegation!
Blades-Mad would however like to wish Gary Speed all the best in his new job!
