Scunthorpe United, who were chasing there first ever victory at Bramall Lane were reduced to ten men as early as the tenth minute when midfielder Grant McCann was shown an instant red card by referee Rob Styles for a miss timed challenge.
From then on United failed to impress and lacked commitment which was expected by the Blades faifthful with Gary Speed's header the closest for the home side in the first half.
Billy Sharp was introduced in the second half and came closest when his close range header cannoned off the post with Rob Hulse lurking and his over head kick flew over the bar in a woeful display by the Blades.
