Sheffield Wednesday have signed former Manchester City and England Under-21 goalkeeper Nicky Weaver on a one-year contract. Weaver, who enjoyed a loan spell at Hillsborough in 2005/06, is expected to go straight into the Owls side for the opening game of the season against Dagenham. Boss Alan Irvine has been on the look out for a goalkeeper following Lee Grant's move to Burnley. "I am really pleased to bring Nicky Weaver to the club," Irvine said. "We were keen to bring an experienced goalkeeper in ahead of the new season and Nicky fits that bill. "The two young goalkeepers we have, Richard O'Donnell and Arron Jameson, did very well in pre-season but I felt we needed that experience for the back four that the two youngsters can only benefit from." Weaver has started 307 senior games in a 16 year career and hold the most clean sheets in a single season at Manchester City after claiming 26 shutouts in 1998/99.
