Port Vale won the game by two goals to one, but the local newspaper reported that two officers of the law where injured after dealing with crowd trouble after the match. which led to one supporter being arrested on suspicion of affray. Around 15 men were seen outside the ground attacking one-another, with carpark attendants seen to be making all attempts to separate the group.
Vale season-ticket holder Phil Sherwin, said: "I was walking home up Hamil Road and a load of Sheffield United fans came out into the Hamil Road, a huge mob. What's the point of having a fence on the Hamil Road car park if people can just walk around it? Both factions just met in Hamil Road. Vale fans were the other side and people were throwing things at each other. I went through the park to get home. I would hope this doesn't cause bigger police bills for Vale. From what I could see it as Sheffield United fans who caused the trouble.
Mark Porter, vice chairman of the Vale supporters' club, said: “I thought the atmosphere in the ground was good but it seemed there were a minority of Sheffield United fans in the bottom corner of the stand that had come for trouble and there was flare thrown on the pitch. I hope Vale aren't hit in the pocket for this with bigger police bills in the future. I hope fans don't suffer either. For example when Vale went to Bury they wouldn't serve Vale fans with alcohol at the game."
CCTV was captured during the scuffle and footage will be reviewed by Staffordshire Police.
