Manager Kevin Blackwell has come under mounting pressure in recent weeks as his injury-hit squad have struggled for consistency but a 3-0 midweek win over Blackpool, aided by Montgomery's first league goal in over four years, kept United in touch with the top six.

Speed said: "He was made up because he scored and he deserved that because he has been fantastic all season - and probably our best player for the last two months or so.

"Monty is a seasoned pro now and is still improving. He never throws in the towel even when he virtually has to drag the team around. The lad is Sheffield United all the way through."

Speed was also full of praise for Paul Connolly, signed on loan from Derby on Monday in time to make his debut against Blackpool.

He added: "The lad has only played reserve games at Derby in the last few months and obviously he was tired but didn't put a foot wrong and did a fantastic job."
