Rumours have been doing the rounds for over week in regards to James Beattie coming back to Bramall Lane, but those reports now have substance as manager Danny Wilson revealed United have 'approached' Beattie.
Wilson, however, did say that "all is on hold until he's fit again."
"I spoke very briefly with James about his position after it was announced that he had left Rangers.
"He informed me that he was not fit and that he didn't know when he would be. I expressed an interest in him keeping us updated as to his fitness and left it at that. I would imagine a number of clubs will be interested in keeping up with his progress."
Beattie was released by Rangers at the end of August - making him a free agent. He scored 34 times in 65 appearances for the Red and White Wizards over two years ago.
