Fans have been screaming for signings elsewhere on the field, but Gary Speed has chosen to strengthen the position between the sticks by handing 32-year-old Richard Wright a short-term four-month contract at Bramall Lane.
Wright, who was a free agent after being released by Ipswich Town, had been training with the Blades for the past week, and he's impressed enough to secure a deal at S2 until January.
The Blades had two goalkeepers on their books before the arrival of the vastly experienced Wright. Steve Simonsen joined in the summer after a successful loan stint with United at the back end of last season, and former Blades boss Kevin Blackwell was in the market for him permanently and managed to get the ex Stoke keeper to sign the dotted line at the Lane. Mihkel Aksalu, an Estonian international, is yet to appear in a competitive first-team game since joining nine months ago.
Wright's switch will pave way for Aksalu to make a brief loan move elsewhere to gain competitive first-team experience on British soil for the first time, as Gary Speed explains: "Richard bolsters the squad, he not only provides competition for Steve Simonsen but also gives us the opportunity to make Mihkel Aksalu available for loan to enable him to get much-needed first team games under his belt.
"We are delighted to be able to bring in someone of Richard's calibre, he's played internationally and has hundreds of first team games behind him."
The Ipswich-born goalkeeper made just under 300 appearances for his hometown club, and he also boasts two full England caps.
