Blades skipper Chris Morgan feels sympathetic for the Blues captain. He said:"I don't know if others were willing to take a penalty, but I assume he thought it was a captain's responsibility to take the fifth kick - if I was in his shoes I'd have probably done the same.
"When he was walking up to place the ball I hoped he would just drill it as hard as he could but he slipped at the vital moment. I felt for him, especially when Manchester United went on to win."
Morgan finished commenting on the game as a whole and cup finals: "Before the game there was a fear that they would cancel each other out like they did in the FA Cup Final a couple of years ago, but I was delighted that both sides went for it.
"United were the best side for the first half but Chelsea got a lifeline with their goal and did well in the second half. In extra-time, Chelsea were by far the better side but penalties are just a lottery. It has to be settled but it's cruel when you lose.
"Cup finals are like play-off finals, there is no place for losers, you just want the ground to swallow you up. No-one remembers losers and it was hard to see John Terry in tears at the end."
