Just over a week ago, Chris Morgan nailed his colours to the mast by rubber-stamping a new three-year deal at Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane, and fellow team-mate Nick Montgomery has followed in his footsteps by also agreeing to sign a for a further three years at S2.
The news about Monty's re-signing indicates that he most probably turned down the opportunity to play for boyhood team Leeds United. Simon Grayson, the Leeds boss, was keen on the 28-year-old and supposedly made a number of attempts to prize the Blades midfielder from South to West Yorkshire. Chris Morgan also allegedly snubbed a move to Leeds to stick with the Blades.
It took around three attempts to persuade Montgomery that Bramall Lane was the place to be. Monty, who if was to see out his further three years, would see him have played in red and white for thirteen years! On the renewal, he said: "It's great to have the contract talks sorted. I've had some special years with United and now I am focussed in looking forward to playing my part in getting the Blades back to the Premier League."
Trevor Birch, meanwhile, the club's Chief Executive, said: "Nick is one of the players who, like Chris Morgan, we see as being part of the backbone of the squad for next season. He brings valuable experience for Kevin Blackwell and his contract signing is another significant step forward by the club as it seeks to mould a squad to mount a sustained challenge in the Championship."
It looks like Paddy's off to QPR, which will cause sparks on the terraces, but now, luring Gary Naysmith, Stephen Quinn and Richard Cresswell to renew is at paramount importance.
