The friendly will take place at Hampden Park, Glasgow - home of the Tartan Army on Wednesday 20 August 2008. This fixture will be the remaining game before they both start qualifying for the 2010 World Cup which is to be held in South Africa.
This fixture had originally being pencilled in for May but is understood that Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington (ex-Sheffield Wednesday) wanted it set at a later date, whilst the Irish boss has confirmed that there will be no other friendlies scheduled in May unless major opposition can be secured.
"It's an ideal time for a friendly because the players will be fresh after their pre-season," said Worthington.
"It will be a friendly with an edge as it's a British Championship type game."
It is expected that, owing to no in juries or suspensions that Sheffield United duo Keith Gillespie and Gary Naysmith will both go head to head against each other.
