28-year-old James Harper has arrived at Bramall Lane on a season-long loan with Brian Howard going the opposite way for a fee believed to be around £500,000.

The Football League have now ratified the Reading man's move to Bramall Lane. On the signature of the experienced Harper, Kevin Blackwell said:

"I have been chasing James for a long time. He will give us a presence in the midfield which we have missed since Gary Speed picked up his injury. I'm delighted to have finally signed.

"He's been in the Championship Team of the Season for about four of the last eight years and others were chasing him so I'm delighted to snap him up. Alongside Monty, Quinny, Williamson, when fit, we have four quality midfielders."

Harper has been allocated a squad number, number 15.

James clinically powered a half-volley past Blades keeper Paddy Kenny in the 2003/2004 campaign at Bramall Lane, it proved to be the winning goal.
