Furphy came to Bramall Lane as manager from Blackburn Rovers in December 1973 (replacing John Harris) and during his reign the club struggled financially, this mostly due to the building of the South Stand which still stands today. In his playing days he had a long distinguished career as a defender between 1950-1968 with Everton, Runcorn, Darlington, Workington and Watford, making over 500 professional appearances.
Despite the financial restraints the Blades almost earned a European place in his first season. He cut ties with the club in 1975 where he went to America to manage the famous New York Cosmos and Pele. Later in life he returned to England to work for BBC Radio Devon. He son Keith also played as a professional footballer in USA and England with Plymouth Argyle.
