Delboy was key to the Blades' promotion and quest to survive in the Premiership a few seasons ago, but suffered a career threatening injury in the 2008/2009 campaign. Kevin Blackwell has confirmed that whether Derek continues as a professional footballer or not is all down to Derek himself.
Blackwell said: "Derek has a career threatening injury and is fighting tooth and nail to get back to full fitness. It is a long, hard recovery process and every day he is fighting like mad to conquer it.
"At times it is upsetting to see someone with Derek's attitude, honesty and appetite flogging himself like he is - it is a tough fight for him.
"I think it will be Derek himself who will ultimately make the decision as to whether he will carry on. It will be up to him to decide whether he can stick the pain any longer, and if he can't, that will be the end."
