Deane, who plays for Perth Glory FC was signed by former Liverpool player and Swindon manager Steve McMahon last Monday (22 August) and will make his first start against at home to Central Coast Mariners in the newly formed Hyundai A-League.
The former Blades front-man will throw on the number 16 jersey as he could line up along side Stuart Young who has represented Hull City and Scunthorpe United.
Of course, we could not go without mentioning that Deane was the first player to net a Premiership goal when his sweet header against Manchester United in August 1992 was the first of the opening day, beating them all by five minutes.
The 6ft 3in striker is usually renowned for wearing the number 10 shirt but has opted for a more unusual squad number this time round.
"I have only worn nine for one season, when I was at Leeds," Deano said. "When I went to Sheffield United I wore ten and I have usually worn double figures. I didn't mind what number it was, it could have been 22 or something but I did want it changed, I suppose it is just superstition."
"I feel ready and I am excited about playing in front of the Perth crowd for the first time. Let's hope we can start the new league with a win!"
Competition to win the first ever A-League will be tough, despite only 8 teams competing in Australia's version of the Premier League it's the New Zealand Knights who will need to be watched as they house seven former English Football League Stars:
- Danny Milosovic (GK), Darren Bazeley (Def), Danny Hay (Def), Ronnie Bull (Def), Neil Emblem (Mid), Simon Yeo (Att), Sean Devine (Att).
Other clubs will also need to look out as Sydney FC have drafted in Steve Corica, David Zdrillic and Dwight Yorke to their starting eleven whilst Kevin Muscat and Daniel Allsop have been snapped up by Melbourne Victory FC.
Perthy Glory begin their campaign against Central Coast Mariners at the Members Equity Stadium today (Friday 26 August 2005) with a 8:00pm kick-off, Australian time.
