darren ferguson, former preston bossChampionship duo Preston North End and Burnley have allowed Darren Ferguson and Brian Laws to be relieved of their manager duties and both will search for a new club; maybe they will be a swift return to management with the Blades?

Though a number of managers have been listed as candidates to take over the Bramall Lane hot seat with Phil Brown, Paul Hart, Chris Coleman (all unattached), Micky Adams (Port Vale), John Carver (Sheffield United caretaker manager) and Andy Scott (Brentford).

Preston allowed Ferguson to leave after their 3-1 defeat to relegation strugglers Middlesbrough on Tuesday; the result left the Deepdale club still bottom of the league and showed very little joy in turning around there season under the son of the Manchester United boss.

Whilst their Lancashire rivals were naturally expecting more from Laws since there decent from the Premier League last season. There 2-1 win at Barnsley on Boxing Day was their first win on the road all season whilst their home form leaves little to be desired from.

It’s become clear that the United board aren’t going to appoint a ‘big name’ manager; but Neil Warnock wasn’t a huge name when he joined the Lane in December 1999 and after turning the club around won promotion on a shoe string budget so who knows!

According to the national press; Paul Hart is current favourite to be installed as the new manager whilst others suggest Micky Adams is in the frame.

Last week Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll distanced himself from a move to Sheffield after their chairman John Ryan allowed United to talk to the former Bournemouth boss.

Until an official press statement is made from Bramall Lane there will be names flying everywhere in the press and on the Internet. But whoever is appointed we only hope that it’s done with careful thought in what is the best interest of the club.
