Sixteen teams contested in the Carling Cup Round Three phase; which were p0layed over Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sheffield United defeated Morecambe 5-0 at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night whilst Sheffield Wednesday lost 3-0 to Everton on Wednesday night.

Cup holders Chelsea secured a safe passage into the next round after their 4-0 win at Hull City and could face Coventry City who shocked the nation when they beat Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford; Michael Misfud netting a brace.

Elsewhere Liverpool breezed past Reading 4-2 at the Madjeski Stadium with a Fernando Torres hat-trick and Arsenal overcame Newcastle United (2-0).

Sheffield United now probably have to take this competition seriously (unlike previous seasons); but could face Premiership opposition in Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea; or worse West Ham United.

The draw for the fourth round takes places this Saturday at 12:00pm whilst the games themselves will take place week commencing 29 October 2007.
