United were forced into extra time when Peter Sweeney netted with ten minutes remaining, cancelling out Stephen Quinn’s first half striker. After 120 minutes had passed the game remained 1-1 with penalties prevailing – United winning 4-3 in sudden death.
It was exactly twelve months to this day that the Blades were dumped out of the same competition last season at Hartlepool (0-2).
The draw will take place following tonight’s lived televised fixture between Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool in S6, leaving the Blades the possibility of playing the old enemy or one of the winners from the first round.
However there are some ties still to be decided after matches were postponed due to the riots which have occurred around the country during the week. The second round also sees non European competing Premier League sides enter the fray.
