Evans, 27 won a five year battle yesterday after he was cleared in court and found not guilty for allegations of raping 19 year old women in North Wales in May 2011.
At the time Sheffield United were suffering one of their lowest points, relegation from the Championship and living a life in league One, which they still remain to this day. Evans had been signed in a £3M deal from Manchester City two seasons previous but it wouldn't be until the Blades succumbed to the third tier that his Bramall Lane career took off.
Evans celebrates scoring against Sheffield Wednesday in the 2-2 home draw in 2011-12.
In April 2012 he was jailed after being found guilty of rape, serving half of a five year sentence - he has maintained his innocence throughout the original trial and the one which has just been completed. At the time of his sentence he had scored 35 goals in all competitions that season and left United second in the league and had scored ten goals in seven consecutive matches. United would fail in their bid to gain promotion, city rivals Sheffield Wednesday instead stole automatic promotion whilst United bitterly lost in the Play-Off Final to Huddersfield Town.
Following his release from prison, Evans struggled to find another club. United accepted a letter to train with the club (being his last club prior to imprisonment), whilst offers at Tranmere Rovers, Oldham Athletic and Grimsby Town saw club sponsors turn against their respective chairman. As a result Evans never trained with United and it wasn't until 20th June 2016 that Chesterfield, under the leadership of Danny Wilson, agreed to take Evans on a one-year deal.
He is currently with the Spirites and had made a glittering start to his Proact career, scoring four goals from his first four games until injury and his impending re-trial limited the number appearances in a Blue shirt, and hasn't played since 10 September.
Any move for Ched Evans would mean communication between the Blades and Chesterfield, and he wouldn't be able to join until the January transfer window re-opened.
An opinion poll on twitter undertaken by ourselves (pictured) shows that there is still a high regard for the striker amongst the supporters of Sheffield United. There will be those who firmly believe that the club should move forward and battle promotion without him, whilst others like myself would love to see a partnership of Sharp and Evans in attack.
Only time will tell if he will ever play in a Red and White shirt again..
