After a successful loan spell at the close of last season, Cotterill is looking for a move from the JJB as his chances of breaking into the first team are limited. Cotterill proved to be a massive influence when he played his football at the Lane in his 3 month spell last season and manager Kevin Blackwell would like him to return to United.
"It's up in the air. I'm talking to my agent and don't want things dragging on now. I've just got married and have been on my holidays and I told my agent not to bother me, but I'm keen to sort things out now I'm back.
"Hopefully, Wigan and Sheffield United can try and strike a deal and hopefully I'll be back at Sheffield United. It depends how things go. The last time I spoke to my agent at the end of last season, he said he was going to be speaking to Wigan and wanted to see what was happening.
"I really enjoyed my time at Bramall Lane. It's a club that should be in the Premiership, but it's going forward and has a bright future. They almost got in the play-offs but, in the end, it was just a little bit too much in the end. We had an upturn, but it just wasn't to be.
"I really enjoyed working under Kevin."
Many players seem to like it at the Blades as Man Utd midfielder Lee Martin would love the opportunity to return. The promotion surge continues as Blackwell looks like to have been boosted with £10m funds as Blades Mad revealed last week.
