The former England goalkeeper suffered a thigh injury just 53 minutes into his debut at Barnsley last week and is a doubt for Carver`s first match in temporary charge following Gary Speed`s exit to become Wales manager on Tuesday.
"We are hoping to give Richard a chance of making the bench," Carver said. "He is absolutely devastated because he has been very patient waiting for his opportunity and when he does he picks up an injury."
Carver could not have asked for a tougher test in his first game at the helm as the third-placed Swans visit Bramall Lane and the former Newcastle coach knows what lies in store.
"I have watched a number of games on Swansea, their position does not tell a lie. They are a side who like to keep possession of the ball and they tend to try and frustrate the fans," Carver added.
"They are a good side, they have played the same way under three different managers. I know what the team is going to be, hopefully the work we have done will be enough for us to win."
