Despite being a reserve regular, Gillespie still makes it into the Northern Ireland starting line-ups and is a popular feature in their squad. Speaking after the victory over San Marino, he said:
"I will be leaving the club there is no doubt about that. There has been a fall-out with the manager and I have not started a game since he took over, so I suppose the writing has been on the wall.
"I am still contracted till the end of the season, so I will not be pushed out of the door. I think the club probably know that. I will be looking for a new club, but it will be on my terms.
"It has been a frustrating time since the manager took over. I haven't started a game for Sheffield United since February so it has been a long time. I have had a few appearances as a sub, but it's not been very much."
