United and SPL big boys Celtic were both showing considerable interest around the 24-year-old, but wage demands has swayed the Blades away. Mulgrew is now set to rejoin Celtic after United decided to seek other targets.
Kevin Blackwell confirmed: "Charlie Mulgrew is one we did speak to. We couldn't agree terms, so we move on. Players these days think they can come in and play for x, y and z. We need a bit of realism, the deal is effectively finished."
The Blades boss also affirmed that a few foreign triallists will be trying to impress at Shirecliffe over the next week or two. Blackie said: "I will have a good look at the lads from Spain, France and Belgium, two of whom have had offers from elsewhere but they want to try their luck in England.
"The one from Spain has made over 70 successive appearances for Atletico Madrid, is still only 23 and is keen to pursue his career over here."
