The Blades started the month of September with a home fixture against Blackburn Rovers, the match ended 0-0 but it certainly didn't go without incident.

On 6 September Winger Keith Gillespie helped his home nation Northern Ireland overcome Spain with a 3-2 win; future transfer target David Healy (Leeds United) scored an hat-trick against the Spaniards.

United played Rovers three days later and both sides would rule missed chances in the thrilling goalless draw. Referee Mike Dean was at the centre of attention as he awarded the home side two penalties where neither David Unsworth or Rob Hulse could find the net whilst at the other end Paddy Kenny saved Morton Ghamst Pedersen's spot kick.

Two days later Sheffield United announce that former Blackburn Manager Brian Kidd joins the Bramall Lane club as a coach until the end of the season. Meanwhile Neil Warnock rubbishes reports that full-back Robert Kozluk is to re-join former club Derby County.

On the following Saturday United are finally beaten at home at the third time of asking; Reading score what should be a Premiership record of 22 seconds when Kevin Doyle burst through the middle to slip past Ian Bennett who deputised for the injured Kenny.

Korean Ki-Hyeon Soel adds an extra for the Royals 25 minutes later before Rob Hulse finds a tight angle to score for 2-1 and United fail to find an equaliser.

After been released by Nottingham Forest at the beginning of the season United agree to take keeper Paul Gerrard on trial and would later sign for United on a free transfer.

Bennett continued in goal for the League Cup tie against Bury in round two and despite fielding a weakened side won 1-0; Christian Nadé netting his first Blades goal since he joined on a free transfer from Troyes. Colin Kazim-Richards, a former Shaker made his full debut against Bury, he had previous come off the bench against Rovers.

On 23 September the Blades first ever visit to the Emirates Stadium was here, Arsenal had yet to win at their new home but this was achieved when United came to town. The Blades had however held the Gunners off until 65th minute until William Gallas.

Mikele Leigertwood has seen his sweet volley disallowed in the first for offside and the Blades looked good, however misery was to follow when a Jagielka (80) own goal and Thierry Henry (85) made it 3-0.

Nearly a week later the club spend £150,000 on a new scoreboard which is installed by Belgian company Barco.

Finally, after seven Premier League matches the Blades claim three points in a match. Rob Hulse puts United ahead against Middlesbrough before Yakubu races through to level and the home side are forced to wait until final minute for a Phil Jagielka thunderbolt for a last minute winner; 2-1.

The Blades claim just four points throughout the month of September whilst they progress in the Carling Cup to round three where they will face Birmingham City.
