A trip to Villa Park - the venue for the Manchester United v Watford FA Cup Semi-Final fixture was the Blades final away outing of the season.
Fans everywhere poured into Birmingham, it was a really carnival atmosphere with fans dressed up from the 118 team, Scooby Doo to Spongebob Square Pants. However there was a serious matter to the game, a point or more would secure Premier League Football next season.
But with Sky TV present in usual stance the Blades failed top do so as Villa turn up the heat and put out a fantastic display, winning 3-0. Gabriel Agbonlahor (25), Ashley Young (42) and Patrik Berger (60) punishing the Blades.
The following Monday Charlton Athletic crashed out of the Premier League with a 2-0 reverse to Tottenham Hotspur in the London Derby, the Addickts needed to win to stand any chance of Premier League football next season.
With Watford and Charlton Athletic relegated it left just one trap door to the Championship firmly open with Sheffield United, Wigan Athletic and West Ham United all fighting to avoid it.
However during the week coming up to the Blades final encounter with Wigan Athletic it was announced that West Ham United would only be fined £5,500,000 for illegally signing and fielding Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano when points deduction was expected.
With this clubs from the bottom tier of the Premiership were ready to compile a law suit against the Premier League for loss of earnings should any of the clubs be relegated, with Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic as front runners.
Back on the football field and the mathematics were very simple, the Blades needed a minimum of a point against the Latics to ensure top flight football whilst Wigan needed to win. An away win would send United into the bottom three unless West Ham United lost at Manchester United.
In theory it sounded simple, but it doesn't always work like that. In fact, it didn't - United lost 2-1 to Wigan Athletic, Paul Scharner (14) started the ball rolling for the visitors before Jonathan Stead levelled for the Blades. But, shortly before the break (44) after a hand ball in the box former Blade David Unsworth stepped up and slotted home a penalty.
Unfortunately for United it didn't work out at the other end, as Unsworth unleashed a deadly spot kick somehow the man behind all the controversy Carlos Tevez put the Hammers ahead and saved them from relegation and thus condemning United to the Championship.
Two days later Neil Warnock resigned from his post despite being offered a new contract, later it would emerge that Bryan Robson would be given the job with Brian Kidd stepped up as his Assistant-Manager. Stuart McCall was given the job at Bradford City.
Under Kevin McCabe the Blades filed a complaint along with Wigan Athletic and other clubs against the Blades relegation after deeming unfair considering the Hammers weren't deducted points. How it all ends we won't know until later.
