Due to the lack of involvement in the FA Cup, after being kicked out by Swansea City in round three the Blades only played three fixtures during the month of February, which included trips to Ewood Park and Anfield.

United can arguably feel hard done by when they travelled to Ewood Park. Jonathan Stead (25 minute) cancelled out Morten Ghamst Pedersen's (22) header which had given Rovers the lead, but United had already hit the post through Rob Hulse. And in the last minute, after Michael Tonge fouled David Dunn Pedersen (90) lashed in a curling free-kick to break Blades hearts.

On 6th February, three days after that 2-1 defeat winger Keith Gillespie represents Northern Ireland as they draw 0-0 with Wales at Windsor Park. Meanwhile a day later Ahmed Fathi scores for Egypt in a 2-0 victory over Sweden before making his first team debut against Liverpool.

Just before the Blades face Hotspur at Bramall Lane Gillespie learns that his punishment for being sent off at Reading on 20 January after striking Stephen Hunt is stretched to four matches despite lodging an appeal.

The fixture against Tottenham got off to a bad start with United surrendering a goal as early as the third minute when Jermaine Jenas was allowed to charge through and gently chip the ball over the advancing Paddy Kenny to take the lead.

But if the Bramall Lane faithful thought it was going to be one of those days they were very much mistaken, Robert Hulse (27) levelled for the Blades before Phil Jagielka (62) slammed home a penalty in the second half.

Sheffield United send three fringe players out on loan, Nicky Law (Yeovil Town), Lloyd Kerry (Torquay United) and Alan Wright (Doncaster Rovers), only Kerry has yet to make a first team appearance.

Egyptian Ahmed Fathi makes his debut at Liverpool as the Blades crash 4-0 at Anfield. The Reds go two-nil in front via a brace of penalties, both dispatched by the legendary Robbie Fowler (20 & 25) before Sami Hyypia (70) and Steven Gerarrd (73) finish the route. Argentinean Javier Mascherano made his first team debut for the victorious Reds.

Academy player Dean Oliver, 19 joins team mate Lloyd Kerry on a moths loan with Torquay United who are eventually relegated out of the Football League whilst Chris Robertson joins the Gulls after being released by United.
