At the Clubs' Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday a spokesperson announced that the club has submitted planning permission to build a new ground and hope to obtain this by the end of 2009.
Their aim is to build a ground that will match the standard of both the Championship and Premier League with the possibility of extending the grounds capacity to 40,000 should England be successful in their bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
However the club did say they were legally bound not to give the exact location of the proposed new ground but did say that it is to be 'not too far' from Ashton Gate.
Chairman Steve Lansdown said: "I've gone to the council, had conversations with all the party leaders, got their support for it, spoken to the planners.
"We've got to go through the due process, but I'm confident we'll get the end result in a reasonable time frame."
